Reflection #2
Video and audio are very useful tools for my teachable area of music, specifically in high school music classes. Within music there is a lot of room for students to learn how to record themselves as they play and how to achieve the best sound on their instrument for recording purposes. Using video and audio in the music realm is also very helpful as it allows students to listen back on their playing and to see what they are doing well or what they need to improve on. In addition to this, for students who plan on attending post-secondary school for music, it is very typical to submit audition tapes, a practice which requires a good knowledge of how to utilize video and audio tools.
An assignment that would be useful to teach video and audio skills in a high school music class would be one which requires students to record themselves playing an excerpt of a piece being worked on in class. This assignment both allows students to become more comfortable with video and audio tools and also allows the teacher to hear how individual students are doing within the ensemble.
Multi-media Learning Theory is useful in the creation of more effective instructional videos and tutorials as it highlights the need to engage students’ attention by including more visuals and interactive opportunities. It is important to create engaging material that utilizes multi-modality as it saves the attention span of students by reducing a monotonous onslaught of text walls and instead triggers the brain’s excitement through eye stimulation using different visuals.
